SAN FRANCISCO — In an effort to capture the raw authenticity of budget travel, Airbnb announced Monday its new “Surprise Bedbug Encounter” package, designed for guests nostalgic for unwashed linens, mystery bites, and existential regret. The experience is said to recreate the chaotic intimacy of backpacker hostels without the burden of meaningful cultural exchange.
Guests opting into the package receive a non-refundable stay in a pre-selected apartment featuring faint mildew, creatively stained couches, and a thriving community of bedbugs named for minor European monarchs. Airbnb says it’s the perfect fit for travelers seeking stories, scabs, and a renewed appreciation for sterile chain hotels.
“We wanted to reintroduce adventure into accommodations,” said Airbnb spokesperson Mara Dunst. “Too many people were sleeping through the night. This package returns the thrill of waking up itchy, confused, and unsure who’s feeding on whom.” Guests are encouraged to keep a bite journal and rate their stay by number of welts.
Early adopters report a renewed sense of humility, often accompanied by frantic laundering and self-blame. One user described the package as “a gritty, tactile reminder that comfort is a capitalist lie.” Others noted the bugs seemed friendlier than most hosts, and at least didn’t ask for cleaning fees. Pets are discouraged, mostly for their own safety.
Critics argue the package exploits low-income aesthetics while charging boutique prices, but Airbnb insists it’s all about immersive realism. The company plans to expand the line with future options like “Mysterious Plumbing Sounds Suite” and “Passive-Aggressive Roommate Deluxe.” Bookings are already up, possibly due to misclicks or ironic TikToks.
Guests are advised to bring a hazmat bag, sense of humor, and a strong immune system. Refunds are unavailable, but bedbugs travel free.
